  1. "If a seed of a lettuce will not grow, we do not blame the lettuce. Instead, the fault lies with us for not having nourished the seed properly." - Buddhist proverb

If a child cannot learn the lesson the way we teach it, try different strategies to make the students learn. The fault is lies with us teachers and educators for not having a proper way of teaching our students. All stakeholders in the child’s learning, we all take the responsibility in the success of the child. The success of the students depends on how effective the curriculum is. As a community, we cannot move forward if we do not make children a true priority for they are our future. Stakeholders must advocate and ensure that they get the educational opportunities and support that they need throughout their school years so that they are successful.

    1. We are but one component in the nurturing of our students. As teachers, we look on how we can compliment or aid the other components in the education of students.

    2. Exactly. Sadly, some parents do not understand that. In order for a child to be successful, all three components must come together: Home (Parents), Child, and School (Teachers, Administrators). We will thrive if we all come together and prioritize the education of our children.

    3. As educators we are responsible for ensuring that our students are engaged in learning. The use of formative assessments is useful in measuring student knowledge and provides useful information regarding modifications or revisits to lessons that were not fully grasped. If we fail to check for understanding, we deprive our students of gaining new knowledge.

  2. “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

Finding the difference that makes a difference.

Collectively, the class, brings one dynamic component to teaching. It is finding that difference that makes a difference in the lives of our students. This is not taking that extra step, this IS the step we take to ensure that all students walk away learning and knowing. Some students will have that obvious trait that he or she will strive on, others will take various probing to find out what makes them tick. As teachers, we must not just be purposeful in teaching the curriculum, but guide the students to learn. Teachers make the curriculum relevant to the lives of our students, for the students are why we are in business. We are in the business of having students learn.

    1. With my students with no English at all, I am glad if they leave my classroom knowing how to say and spell one word of our spelling words for the week. It is easy for them to understand the words but it is very hard for to say and spell the words. It is my job to find that difference that makes a difference in the lives of my students.

  3. Stephen King once said, "We never know which lives we influence, or when, or why." As teachers are are given the opportunity to help others, to guide them, to teach them so that they can find their path to help others and contribute to society. Many people from the outer islands come to Guam for a better life, to provide the best education for their children, to find employment with reasonable salary. We help these children by providing them the opportunity to learn, many times its a struggle because we need to ensure we have the patience for it but sometimes when a student comes to you and says thank you, to show gratitude and appreciation for what we've done for them, is very rewarding.

  4. My first curriculum engagement is on Journaling. Journals can be a helpful teaching tool for as ESL students. Through the journals the students can write their entries and freely and will not be hindered by grammar and spelling.
Journals are used in my classroom’s daily writing as part of the school’s writing intervention goal. My little first graders write their ideas and thoughts for reading, math, science, and social studies. They are all given a chance to proudly read their entries to their friends

    1. Good for you that this technique works for your students. My goodness, my students can not even do this. I try but just give up because it just causes too much frustration on the students and me as well.
